BROADSIDE 29XX

The steady rumble of the ship’s gravity engines was now mixed with the unnerving thrum of dozens of approaching insect wings. The crew had foresight enough to fit the boarding nets in case of just such an attack, woven alloy strands draped the deck and rigging in a gleaming web of silver spider silk.

“Steady, men! Make your shots tell!” The captain barely had time to utter this last rallying sentiment before the creatures were upon them. Flying up from under the ship's keel, a squadron of Bugmen split into two groups and came streaming up and around the vessel in crude formation.

The first Bugmen to attack were overzealous in their hunt and came careening into the razor fine netting. The aggressors were driven into the mesh by the force of their own bodies and were ripped to ribbons, their fluttering wings and twitching members a final testament to their murderous desires.

A report of gunfire erupted from below as the marines began their counterattack. Bugmen tangled in the lines or fluttering behind their comrades were struck by the radium balls, the projectiles piercing them through and through. Fragments of their hard exoskeletal carapace went flying out into the pale sky.

“Port side, ho!” A lusty voiced called out. Just then a looming shape appeared not far out along the port beam, a disgusting mass of putrid balloons. There flew a resin zeppelin teeming with Bugmen and all their filth. The stench was nearly more than the men could bare.

“Fire!” The voice was barely audible above the din of rifle fire and the chittering of the invading Bugmen. The port side cannons opened up and split the air with their terrifying force. A thick cloud of vapor and a whiff of ozone lingered there as the ship recoiled slightly by the power of its own guns. Their aim was true. The foul dirigible was shredded and at once began to slow.

A cheer went up from the men, which quickly turned to screams of dismay as the Bugmen at last cut their way through the protective net and began their grim butchery.

“Repel boarders!” The captain engaged his atomic saber. The unmistakable hiss of the coalescing nuclear blade rallied the men and with the captain they charged forward into the fray!
